Pithy statement regarding works vis-a-vis justification
Here's a pithy way of seeing the role of works in regard to a Christian's life. Because we are commanded to do good works, once regenerated, yet works don't have anything to do with our justification. Once you allow works to enter justification justification ceases to be of grace and becomes something YOU do, which it isn't effective and can't be. (It's an illusion the devil uses to keep people in his power. You have to rely solely on the works of Christ for your justification by merely having faith in Him. Otherwise you end up in the power of clerics and ritual and a means of justification that is never certain and never enough. This is not mere intellectual doctrine, it effects you essentially. Doctrine is part of conversion. What you believe. It takes effort to learn. Regeneration just happens, effected by the Word and the Spirit, but conversion requires effort.)
Yet so what role do works have? Reward. The apostle Paul and Jesus are clear that there is degree of reward in heaven. Degree of level of being as well. So here's a pithy way of seeing this that I saw in a comment thread:
(By the way the phrase 'future justification according to works' is a doctrinal belief of Roman Catholicism and current movements like Federal Vision, and it is bad doctrine, and the guy who wrote what is below is answering their bad doctrine.)

3. Future Justification According to Works: Are our works evaluated on Judgment Day before or after our glorification?
AFTER, of course!
+++++++
In other words, when we are judged our justification (i.e. our salvation) is set no matter whether we've done works or not. But then once glorified and in heaven the works we DID do have an effect on our reward and level of being and so on. Still, the least person in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than the greatest human being on earth today, it goes without saying. And salvation is by faith alone. Also, once regenerated and having the Spirit in you you naturally do good works because it becomes your nature to do good works. A good tree produces good fruit naturally...
And good works are things like the two great commandments of Jesus. Work development are good works, if done with the motive to glorify God. Etc.
You can read more into it from there...
