God's essence and energies
Interesting note from this article:
In Orthodox theology, man's salvation and redemption mean his deification. This teaching must always be understood in the light of the distinction between God's Essence and His Energies. Union with God means union with the Divine Energies, not with the Divine Essence.
An early witness to this teaching about the distinction between the Divine Essence and Energies is provided by St. Basil the Great, one of the Cappadocian Fathers of the fourth century. In "Letter 234," he writes: "We know our God from His Energies, but we do not claim that we can draw near to His Essence. For His Energies come down to us, but His Essence remains unapproachable."
You can see in this the higher energy, energy of consciousness, that is accumulated by self-remembering. And of course our lower centers can't use properly such level of energy and explode when they hijack it. But this is what is wanted by the Old Man within us because this gets the unwanted higher energy out of us. When we can handle the higher energy without getting resentful (and everything else) it means we have inner command and have awakened to the Old Man within us and all the features that go along with that old nature and have transcended them all through understanding and struggle.
