Ten book theology list
Having been through the school of theology I can now make a definitive ten book list (seven doesn't work for theology). Because I know the thread that needles through all of them, and I have the perspective that comes from developing understanding of a subject.
1. Holy Bible, AV1611
2. John Calvin - Works
3. Herman Witsius - Economy of the Covenants
4. John Bunyan - Pilgrim's Progress
5. Thomas Boston - Human Nature in its Fourfold State
6. Ouspensky - Main Work Books
7. Geerhardus Vos - Works
8. Louis Berkhof - Systematic Theology
9. Meredith Kline - God, Heaven and Har Magedon
10. Willem Teellinck - Path of True Godliness
Let me defend this quickly: the thread is what used to be called 'Federal Theology' and is called now Classical Covenant Theology. Vos, Berkhof, and Kline are the three major 20th century theologians who 'had' that and understood it. Calvin is the main fount, and Witsius is the classical expression of it, and really compliments Calvin's works in making the exposition of classical covenant theology full. Ouspensky is the pure source of the Work, which is the pure biblical doctrine at the practical level. The Holy Bible speaks for itself. It is the source of everything. (Kline is worthy of this list because he is/was working within the school of CCT. So even though he is very contemporary there is nothing shallow there. His work is the capstone of CCT. His enemies are many, but it's mostly based on lesser intramural disputes. I'm digressing, but those books above are powerful school influence. Doing the Faith, and the Work, of course, is actual real power... The Bunyan is on-the-mark visual doctrine. The Boston is the mandatory description of the four states of man, which also shows sacred, redemptive history, in the clearest way doctrinally that can be seen. The Teellinck represents spiritual warfare. It is the one inclusion that could be replaced by a number of others (Gurnall's Christian in Complete Armour or Watson's Heaven Taken By Storm being the two most obvious).
This list is balanced and complete; and it is the most pure and powerful school of apostolic biblical doctrine: five solas, doctrines of grace, classical covenant theology. It contains practical level works, as well as philosophical level and theoretical level. It contains a scholastic level treatment (Witsius) to compliment Calvin's more Renaissance era humanist treatment. It contains everything.
