Example of thinking practically
As a Christian, or non-Christian even, you hear that you must love God. This can, and usually does, fall on deaf ears, or, if not that, it rings somewhat hollow. Like philosophy or theory but not something practical. Not something you can grab onto and understand.
Here is Thomas Watson on that:
“What means should be used to excite our love to God?
(1) Labour to know God aright. The schoolmen say truly, Bonum non amatur quod non cognoscitur; ‘we cannot love that which we do not know.’
[from The Ten Commandments, vol. 2 of the Banner of Truth 3 vol. Body of Practical Divinity. Vol. 1 is Body of Divinity, and vol. 3 is The Lord's Prayer]
We need knowledge of and understanding of God gained from his revealed word to be able to know him. Then we either love him or not based on something.
