The ordo salutis as an octave

Look at this octave (it's the 'ordo salutis' or Order of Salvation):


  • DO: Election


  • RE: Effectual Calling


  • MI: Regeneration

  • [interval]

  • FA: Conversion: Faith & Repentance (involves effort - 'knowledge')


  • SOL: Justification


  • LA: Adoption


  • SI: Sanctification (involves effort - 'being')

  • [interval]

  • DO: Glorification


What's interesting about the above octave is the fact that it is only in two of the things where man is even capable of making efforts, and they just so happen to fall around the two intervals. In the first case the effort seeems to be beyond the first inteval but it's really not, because with conversion you have to have that knowledge of doctrine and the Bible and without it you can't convert in a real way, so that effort to get that knowledge is really happening before the note of conversion is fully sounded.

And with the note of sanctification there is effort in the 'active role' which is effort to effect increase in level of being. (Sanctification also is something that happens to you while you play a passive role, i.e. it is the Holy Spirit working in you.) But it's interesting that sanctification just so happens to reside, in the Order of Salvation just at the SI note and of course effort is needed between the SI and DO notes to get across that interval...

[The linear look of the above gives a false impression that it all happens in linear order, but just as knowledge and being must be worked on at the same time, and just as the two conscious shocks have to be done simultaneously, all the above things happen sort of at the same time, or come into reality by degree all sort of at the same time (really sort of in an 'above time' sort of way)...]
