Something very important to have foremost in mind
The Bible just simply is not clear on what happens to the unregenerate when they die. It is clear on what happens to the regenerate: the regenerate go to be with God in heaven.
Hades (hell) has different meanings in the New Testament. That too makes the destiny of the unregenerate not clear.
This, in theology, is the subject of the 'intermediate state'. It is not a settled subject in theology. Berkhof, in his big Systematic Theology, covers it comprehensively, and through it all you can see that theologians just don't know (i.e. the Bible doesn't say) what happens when you die with no saving faith.
The issue was not a big one in the early centuries of the Church because it was believed that Christ would return soon back then. As it became clear that this church age would be longer than at first believed the issue of the intermediate state (the state of the departed after physical death and before the ressurection when Christ appears again) raised itself.
My whole point in this post is this: when people die we rarely really suspect they are going to heaven. We just don't, because if we have any sense of the difference between mechanical sleep and level of being represented by even Man #4, let alone #5 and higher we have a difficult time thinking people who in this life were basically asleep are going to be be in heaven, which Jesus Himself said needs to be conquered.
Heaven requires a degree of inner command, humility, and gratitude in place of resentment that is a rare development among humankind. Not unknown, yet rare. We can surely see that most people don't have this level of development, and God's Plan is not about making people developed by fiat; in fact God's Plan exists so that people can develop consciousness, real will, and understanding (level of being) so that it's real and not just created in them by fiat.
We, also, can't see these same people as going to hell (the only other alternative that theologians see and state). Anyway, hell happens after judgment, not after physical death. Hell is a place you are judged to at the great white throne judgement after you've been ressurected when Christ appears at His second coming.
So the big argument against unregenerate people dying and then entering hell (aside from the fact that the Bible doesn't state it happening like that) is that that upstages the Judgement at the second coming.
What then happens to people who are not regenerate when they die?
Recurrence.
The Bible allows for it (has room for it), and common-sense and experience senses and intuits it (maybe even, in some cases, sees it directly). The very elderly even become childlike as if they are closing the circle and getting close to being children again. The essential difference in people that goes beyond type also argues for recurrence.
Now I'll make the big point of this post: Unless you get this sense of being in a dead recurrence you will never do what you need to do to successfully take heaven by storm.
In other words: if you innocently think you're going to go to heaven when you die, and that other people have gone there, and la da da, you will never confront the stark reality that NO!, you are in a repetition where you are cycling in and out of Hades, literally, in a real way, from death to death. A cycle of living mechanical sleep death to 'land of shades' death, back to living mechanical sleep death. The wheel of the fifth dimension. Recurrence.
So you have to SEE this to be able to truly start to escape it in a real way.
Look around you. See elderly people. Know they will be in Hades when they die, and will still be in their living circle of time. The same time, the same life. With changes, yes, maybe for some, but the same.
(In a real sense you are in death NOW, just as when you are truly born again you are in heaven with King Jesus NOW. So, the actual interval of death - the time between phyiscal death and birth - is actual death in Hades, but also this life in recurrence is death as well in that you are in the kingdom of death, recurring, alienated from God and from eternal, real, life.)
Regeneration is rare. Sanctification (which is entering the #4 Man level and developing level of being by degree to the #5 Man level and higher) is how you take heaven by storm.
There are three classes of people (and their status is not set in stone in any one class):
1. People who are willfully evil (or just zombies) and who do the will of the devil, and have no other desire, and are hardened by God and destined for hellfire, and who WANT to be in hellfire.
2. People who are in the mechanical cycle of recurrence and who will go to Hades, the land of shades, when they die (not 'become angels', not 'be with God in heaven' because they simply don't yet have that development, realistically speaking) and are either in a stagnant development, an ascending development, or a descending development, in recurrence that is, and may very well be playing a needed role in the Plan of God by having children and so on, but nevertheless are in the realm of death and Hades that is recurrence.
3. People who when they die are going to Heaven. These are truly regenerated souls who have the degree of consciousness, real will, and understanding that represents real development of level of being, and who have taken self and heaven by storm, and who may be (probably are) at his point total nobodies, but who have God and the celestial realms in their eyes and hearts and minds and being and essence. These individuals are rare, but that's not to say anybody currently in recurrence couldn't become one of them.
So when you look around you and you look at yourself you have to have this realistic assessment of where people go when they die. When you face the fact that ascending to heaven is rare then you become real about your own situation. You shock yourself out of your illusion and sleep. And you don't think that your nice mother, who is not evil, is going to heaven by default but is going to the land of shades and will continue in recurrence. (Having this knowledge of recurrence and Hades is important because it allows you to see the alternative to heaven or hell, because in most cases you just don't realistically see people you know as going to either heaven or hell, and if you don't have the alternative of recurrence and Hades to explain where they DO go you will not have a serious belief or faith.) That is reality. Only the regenerate who have true understanding and consciousness and real will - who are true believers who are that WITH UNDERSTANDING and no shame...who have overcome the world...who genuinely don't fear man any more but fear only God...these strange, lone individuals who truly have heaven in their eyes and essence are the ones really going to heaven.
Everybody needs to recognize all this. Since the Bible is unclear it makes it too easy to assume everybody who self-identifies as a believer is going to heaven, but we can observe that is probably not the case. Individual X who is a church leader even can obviously be as dead asleep in life as any unbeliever (potentially), and hence is not somebody who has heaven and glorification IN THEM now (which is what you need to have), and will obviously continue to cycle in recurrence.
This bold, awake facing of reality concerning where people go at death (and having this rare knowledge of the real possibilities of where people go at death) forces you to awaken IF you truly desire to escape recurrence.
